"Cannon School" As part of the National Park Services' Historic Weapons Program the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument will host two black powder training courses this Fall. September 23 & 24, 2006: 18th Century Cannon Students attend one day in the classroom learning black powder history and safety and a second day on the gun deck of the Castillo drilling and firing a six pounder iron gun with the appropriate 18th century drill for either Spanish or English artillery. October 21, 2006: 18th Century Flintlock Musket This is a single day training session on black powder safety and small arms including the 18th century manual of arms and firing procedures and blank firing qualification. This training is free to attendees, but we are limited to a class size of 24 students and 4 supernumeries. The primary purpose of these training courses is to train up living history volunteers for the Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas National Monuments and to assist other Agencies, Parks and Historical Institutions with similar programs.
